So it’s fitting that Elton John joins cast and crew from past and present, as the curtain falls on the show’s final West End performance.
The English pop singer-songwriter is all smiles as he arrives hand-in-hand with husband David Furnish, at London’s Victoria Palace Theatre. The 69 year-old hitmaker opts for understated style, in a dark tailored suit injected with a splash of colour by his rose-tinted spectacles.
After 11 years and 4,600 performances, the show – chronicling the tale of a coal miner’s son’s dreams of becoming a ballet dancer – is going on tour, while the theatre undergoes refurbishment.
The musical has been raising money for the East Durham Trust, a charity which combats deprivation in the Easington area.
