Both the Sun and stars shine on London’s Southbank Centre on the hottest day of the year, as the 2016 British Academy Television Awards begins.

Walking the Royal Festival Hall’s red-hot carpet is actress Sheridan Smith, who puts her rumoured recent stage troubles behind her by stunning in an intricate black lace dress with sheer sleeves. Also sending temperatures soaring with her sexy sartorial style is former ‘EastEnders’ actress Kara Tointon, who dazzles in a dove grey gown by Brit designer Amanda Wakeley.

As for the men, ‘Night Manager’ Brit actor Tom Hiddleston is spied arriving at the last minute at the A-list event, while tuxedo-wearing Justin Timberlake and Josh Hartnett give the bash an international feel.

As the city bakes in a heatwave, ‘The Great British Bake Off’ is one of the shows that’s transformed mass popularity into industry recognition. Other notable winners include ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ and ‘Poledark’

In fact, the BBC has a successful ceremony, with its ‘Wolf Hall’ collecting the coveted Best British Drama gong. And the show’s director Peter Kosminsky is among several recipients to use their acceptance speeches to defend the BBC against a rumoured impending end to its editorial impartiality.
